Oehler Model 36

A PC-based chronograph powered and connected over a single USB cable, covering standard velocity, rate of fire and rebound (COR) measurement.

The Model 36 puts the computer at the center. It runs from a Windows PC over USB with no separate power supply, which keeps lab wiring as simple as it gets. It covers three measurement tasks: ordinary muzzle velocity; rate of fire for automatic weapons, up to 6,000 rounds per minute and up to 400 rounds in one burst; and coefficient of restitution (COR) for sporting goods, computing the ratio of inbound to rebound velocity on every shot. The interface matches the System 85, so existing gun and ammunition data files carry over and nothing is lost when you change instruments. Reports come out as PDF, and the raw time data exports to Excel for your own analysis. On the input side it needs two or three photoelectric screens; in a laboratory that usually means Model 57 infrared screens.

Overview

The Model 36 hands display, logging and statistics to a Windows PC and keeps only the precision timing in the box, so the hardware is simple and power and data share one USB cable. Its three modes cover most of what a ballistics lab asks for. Standard mode reports the time increment, the instrumental velocity and the proof velocity difference, so the operator can judge whether a reading is credible. Automatic mode records bursts of up to 400 rounds at rates up to 6,000 rounds per minute, which suits rate-of-fire and function testing of automatic weapons. Rebound mode measures inbound and rebound velocity and computes the coefficient of restitution shot by shot, for golf, tennis and baseball equipment testing. The interface is the same as the System 85 and the gun and ammunition data files are interchangeable, so a lab running both does not maintain two databases. Every test produces a PDF report, and raw time data exports to Excel.
