Skyscreen Tripods / 4 ft Rail

Pressed dimples preset the spacing of three screens. Screen spacing is the denominator of every velocity reading.

Tripods and rail are the foundation of a Skyscreen setup, offered as a pair of folding stands (Skyscreen Tripods) or as adjustable tripods with a 4 ft rail. The rail is 1/2 inch EMT conduit with three precisely pressed dimples that mark the positions of the three screens. This is an accuracy part, not a convenience: screen spacing is the denominator of the velocity calculation, and any tape-measure error passes into the reading at the same ratio. The adjustable version adds height adjustment for uneven ground on outdoor ranges.

Overview

Velocity is distance divided by time. Oehler's timing is very precise, so the main uncertainty is usually distance: the actual spacing between screens. Measure with a tape and a 1% spacing error is a 1% velocity error, far larger than the instrument's typical 0.25%. The factory rail is 1/2 inch EMT conduit with three pressed dimples; the screens drop in and setup is done, with nothing to measure or align. The folding pair suits flat ground and portable work. The adjustable tripods with 4 ft rail add height adjustment, so the rail can be leveled on a slope, avoiding the effective-spacing error of a tilted screen plane. The stiff EMT rail keeps its dimple positions over years of use.

Features

Dimples set the accuracy

Screen spacing is the denominator of the velocity calculation; rated accuracy without measuring on site.

Adjustable version for rough ground

Level the rail on slopes or uneven terrain and avoid effective-spacing error from a tilted screen plane.

Folds for transport

Quick to deploy and pack for portable work.

Stiff EMT conduit

Resists bending in long use, so the dimple positions stay put.

Mounting hardware and applications

Skyscreen side rail

Locating part · RAIL

Side rail holds lateral position

Works with the 4 ft main rail to fix screen attitude. Rail parts are accuracy parts: replace when bent or lost, never substitute.

Setup · SETUP

Screens drop into the dimples

No tape, no alignment. The three screens sit at the same spacing every time, so results compare across dates.
